The full tasting and booking process
1. Initial inquiry
Email hello@birdiesbakingco.com with your wedding date, venue, expected guest count, and 2–4 inspiration images. We respond within 48 hours with a date-availability check, a preliminary quote based on your guest count, and the next step if you want to move forward. Couples in Fort Wayne, Columbia City, and Warsaw — and at Allen, Whitley, and Kosciusko county venues — all start here.
2. Design conversation
A short email or phone conversation about the design — colors, mood, structural elements, finish style (buttercream, fondant, or a mix), and whether fresh florals or sugar work belong in the design. You do not need to know exact details yet; this is the brainstorming pass. By the end of this conversation we have a working design concept and a confident per-serving tier (buttercream $5, detail $7, or showpiece $9+) for the quote.
3. Tasting box
A curated 4–6 flavor + filling sampler is delivered to your home in northeast Indiana (or picked up in Columbia City if preferred). Each combination is portioned and labeled so two people can taste together. The tasting fee is a flat $35 and is credited toward your final cake — so the tasting is effectively free if you book. We curate the box to your stated preferences rather than sending a generic assortment, which keeps the experience tight to your wedding.
4. Design lock + deposit
After the tasting, you pick your flavor and filling combinations, confirm the final design and serving count, and pay a 50% non-refundable deposit to reserve the date. The remaining balance is due 14 days before the wedding. This is the point where the cake is officially on our schedule — before deposit, dates are tentative even after a tasting.
5. Wedding-week communication
Two weeks out, we send a wedding-week checklist: pickup time, who is picking up, transport box pickup, setup notes specific to your cake, and coordinator handoff details. The morning of, the cake is ready in Columbia City for pickup by your designated friend, family member, or planner. We provide a sturdy transport box, dowel placement guidance, and a step-by-step setup card.
6. Wedding day
Cake leaves our kitchen ready to set up on arrival. Most Fort Wayne venues are a 25-minute drive; most Winona Lake and Warsaw venues are 28 minutes; Columbia City venues are in-town. For larger cakes (3+ tiers), we recommend the day-of helper plan an extra 30 minutes at the venue to dowel-test and align tiers before guests arrive.

Where is the cake tasting held?+
The tasting happens at your home. We deliver a curated tasting box of portioned flavor and filling combinations with tasting notes. Couples in the Fort Wayne metro, Columbia City, Warsaw, and surrounding Allen, Whitley, and Kosciusko counties receive the box at their preferred address. Pickup at our Columbia City kitchen is also available if you prefer that.
Is there a fee for the cake tasting?+
The tasting fee is $35. It is credited toward your final wedding cake when you book, so the tasting is effectively free if you go forward with the order. We charge the fee to keep the curated tasting box program sustainable for serious wedding inquiries rather than open-ended sampling.
How many flavors are in the tasting box?+
Each tasting box contains 4–6 flavor + filling combinations — for example: vanilla bean with raspberry buttercream, chocolate with salted caramel, lemon with cream cheese, almond with strawberry. We curate to your preferences from the initial inquiry rather than sending a generic assortment.
What flavors and fillings are available?+
Standard cake flavors: vanilla bean, chocolate, lemon, red velvet, strawberry, marble, almond, carrot, funfetti. Standard fillings: vanilla buttercream, chocolate buttercream, raspberry, strawberry, lemon curd, salted caramel, cream cheese, fresh fruit. Custom flavor pairings are welcome at no additional charge. Allergen-friendly substitutions (gluten-friendly, dairy-free, egg-free) are available with advance notice.
When should I schedule the tasting?+
Ideally 3–4 months before the wedding date. This gives time for the design conversation, the tasting itself, and the 8-week design-lock deposit deadline. For May–October peak season weddings, plan the initial inquiry 6–12 months out — dates fill 3–6 months ahead and tastings happen earlier in the timeline.
Do I need a confirmed date before tasting?+
No — but we ask whether the date is tentatively available before sending the tasting box, because the tasting fee credit only applies if you book. If your date is already taken, we will tell you up front so you can decide whether to proceed.
Can my parents, planner, or partner come to the tasting?+
Yes — the tasting box is portioned for two people but easily stretches to 3–4 people for shared tasting at home. There is no in-person Birdie's representative at the home tasting; the curated portions and labels are the experience. Most couples taste with their partner or one or two close family members.
How long does the tasting take?+
20–30 minutes at home is typical. Each portion is a small wedge — enough to taste flavor, texture, and pairing balance. We recommend tasting in the order we suggest in the box notes, with water or unsweetened tea between flavors.
Do you offer baking classes or in-kitchen tastings?+
Not currently for wedding tastings. We run occasional small-group baking classes (pie-crust technique, cookie decorating); follow our Instagram @birdiesbakingco_ for class announcements. Wedding cake tastings remain home-delivered to keep the program focused.
