Which Cookies Travel Best for Shipping and Gifting

Customers ask roughly twice a week if we ship — we do not, technically. But we do help families assemble gift boxes for in-state pickup that get hand-carried or driven to relatives in Indianapolis, South Bend, Chicago, and beyond. Here is the cookie-by-cookie reality of which Birdie's cookies travel well, which do not, and how we pack them.

Cookies that travel well (3+ days)

  • Sourdough Pistachio Chocolate Chunk — sturdy, low-moisture, pairs well with travel. Holds shape and texture in a sealed box for 5+ days.
  • White Chocolate Raspberry Matcha — slightly less stable because of the white chocolate, but holds for 3 days at room temperature.
  • Drop sugar cookies (custom orders) — bake denser and ship beautifully. Great for corporate or family gift boxes.

Cookies that do not travel well

  • Lemon Cookies with Raspberry Buttercream — sandwich cookies with buttercream filling soften within a day. Eat within 24 hours of pickup.
  • Cinnamon rolls — best within 24 hours; reheat-and-eat only.
  • Anything with a glaze or icing top — pretty for a few hours, then sticky.

How to pack a cookie gift box

For a hand-carried or driven gift box, line a sturdy box with parchment, layer cookies with parchment between rows (so frosting does not stick to the next layer), and fill empty space with crumpled tissue or shredded parchment to prevent shifting. Seal the box and keep it cool — out of direct sunlight in a car, ideally in a cooler bag for drives over 90 minutes.

We can pre-pack a gift box for you at pickup at no extra charge — just mention "gift box" when ordering and tell us the recipient and travel distance. Common northeast Indiana destinations: Indianapolis (3 hours), South Bend (90 minutes), Chicago (3 hours), Columbus (4 hours), Detroit (3.5 hours).
